December 2018 national eResearch newsletter

Welcome to the December AeRO eResearch Newsletter

Message from the AeRO CEO

AeRO would like to thank you all for making 2019 a great year for eResearch.

It was your involvement and effort that enabled AeRO to deliver fantastic, growing events in C3DIS, eResearch Australasia, and the AeRO Forum. We expanded our outreach activities, launched the AeRO Scholarship fund, and are working towards an eResearch Champions program to support the fantastic volunteers who participate in Hacky Hours, Data Clinics, and other lunchtime drop-in activities.

All of that is dependent on the people – eResearch practitioners and beyond – who make it such a joy to be part of this community.

Enjoy the holidays and I can’t wait to see you all again next year

Sam Moskwa, AeRO CEO.

CDL-Dryad Accelerating Data Publication: New Models for Research Institutions

You are invited to a workshop (8-Feb-19 at Monash) to explore building a globally-accessible, transparent, and low-cost data publishing and curation service, and also provide an opportunity to find out how your institution can take advantage of the new CDL-Dryad partnership. The workshop is jointly convened by the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC), the California Digital Library (CDL), and Dryad.

With funding from an IMLS National Infrastructure grant, the Melbourne workshop is one of a series of facilitated discussions by CDL on institutional values, needs, and potential community-based business models that meet collective goals, support researchers, and create a sustainable, attractive new Dryad service offering.

BioRDC Australian Environmental Microbiome Research Data Cloud Project Now Complete

Commencing early in 2018, this project’s aim was to make existing large and complex continental scale environmental metagenomics data more accessible to researchers through the establishment of a cloud-based data analysis system. This important research infrastructure is now fully operational. Researchers may now access and also analyse and interpret the data on the cloud. These capabilities are live on both the Bioplatforms Data Portal and Galaxy Australia.

This project was funded by ARDC, with collaborators at UQ’s Research Computing Centre, Melbourne Bioinformatics (Vic), CSIRO (Tas), Atlas of Living Australia (ACT) and the Centre for Comparative Genomics (WA).

HETI Health Education & Training Resources

Demand for and eHealth capable workforce is highlighting the need for eHealth education and training. NSW Health and the University of Sydney have collaborated to develop learning resources as a component of a comprehensive Digital Health Curriculum for NSW Health.

Find out more about this project in the article “Curriculum Resource Co-design and Development for a Digital Health Workforce and Digital Health Ready Graduates” by McGregor et al, published in December issue of Health Education in Practice: Journal of Research for Professional Learning (see https://openjournals.library.sydney.edu.au/index.php/HEP).

 Tinker Tinker HASS Online Environment

Tinker (https://tinker.edu.au) is an online environment designed for the discovery and exploration of digital methods, tools, data, and training for researchers in the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS).

It represents a national approach towards digital HASS skills and training in Australia.

The Tinker environment will provide direct access to a range of advanced tools and research data repositories, improving the capacity of HASS researchers to engage with digital tools and methods. The project team is currently seeking feedback from the HASS community.

Please contact Greg D’Arcy (gregory.darcy@unimelb.edu.au) if you have direct feedback on the website, or would like to be involved in planned user testing scheduled for early 2019.
