The Federation for the Advancement of Victorian eResearch (FAVeR) and the Australian National Data Service (ANDS) have teamed up to host an event on making research data collections more valuable and reusable, on Friday 21 July, at La Trobe City Campus, Melbourne.

Participants will hear lessons learned from recent projects, examples of successful approaches and the benefits of sharing research data. The event is aimed at staff working on research data in libraries, eResearch, IT, research groups, research institutes and government organisations.

Radio Astronomy research creates huge amounts of data – and that created a significant challenge for Auckland University of Technology’s Institute for Radio Astronomy and Space Research (ISASR).

The solution, the Long White Cloud Correlator (LWCC), uses a dedicated high-speed REANNZ link to transfer data from the ISASR’s Warkworth radio-telescope base, to Catalyst’s data centres around the country – then back again once analysed.

This cloud storage gives AUT extreme flexibility and cost-effectiveness in building and tearing down a correlator environment quickly, easily and cheaply.

The University of Sheffield has announced the outcome of a joint venture with Figshare. Together they have delivered an integrated hub for managing and sharing research data, named ORDA (Online Research Data https://orda.shef.ac.uk/).

By creating a public portal and assigning digital object identifiers (DOIs), Figshare makes an organisation’s research products searchable, discoverable, and citable, and their impact and attention is captured through statistical reporting and altmetrics.

This solution enables researchers to enable open access to data while providing a secure, long-term space for a wide range of content.

The Atlas of Living Australia (ALA), Biodiversity and Climate Change Virtual Laboratory (BCCVL) and Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) have joined forces to deliver an exciting and innovative new training program called EcoEd. EcoEd provides cohesive training and skill development to university lecturers and researchers enabling them to combine theoretical concepts with real-world applications developed by three NCRIS facilities (ALA, BCCVL and TERN) into undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum.

RLUK (Research Libraries UK) has published a report on the role of Research Libraries in the creation, archiving, curation, and preservation of tools for the Digital Humanities.

It is widely accepted that research libraries play an important role in facilitating academic research and teaching. However, given the technological advances of the last few decades, this role has been continuously transforming.

Accordingly, RLUK launched the ‘Research Libraries and Digital Humanities Tools’ project to explore the role that libraries play in Digital Humanities research, culminating in this Report.

Simon Gladman has just arrived back at the EMBL-ABR: Melbourne Bioinformatics Node after eight weeks delivering training across Europe, all while optimising the Nectar-funded Genomics Virtual Laboratory (GVL) for its international users and forming new collaborations.

This latest blog (https://www.melbournebioinformatics.org.au/projects-blog/uk-tour-2017-blog2/) wraps up his last month’s highlights including bioinformatics training for University of Cambridge genetics researchers, genome assembly and Galaxy Administration workshops in Montpellier, France and working with GVL enthusiasts at the Cloud Infrastructure for Microbial Bioinformatics project (http://www.climb.ac.uk/) and the Sanger Institute (http://www.sanger.ac.uk/), to improve the GVL for everyone.

NCI Australia’s Raijin supercomputer has been ranked as Australia’s fastest in the Top500 list released at the International Supercomputing Conference 2017. Raijin supercomputer comes in at world number 70 with a measured performance of 1.67 Petaflops.
